Sojourner Truth (first introduced as Belle): Belle, or Isabella, is a baby born to Mau Mau Bette and Baumfree in the beginning of the novel, who later grows up to become the famous abolitionist and American Hero we still know and celebrate today, Sojourner Truth. Belle goes through many struggles as a slave before she becomes free and changes her name to Sojourner Truth.
Colonel Johannes Hardenbergh: A wealthy Dutch landowner and slaveowner who owned Belle and her parents at the time of her birth. He passes away when Belle is only three years-old.
Baumfree: Belle's father who was a very tall and strong man. Baumfree is a Low Dutch word that means "tree", which suited him because of his stature. Baumfree was much older than Belle's mother and had already had two wives before her.
Mau Mau Bett: Belle's mother who was a big, stocky woman with large hands. She had parented ten children with Baumfree before Belle, but they had all died or been sold away. She is a very kind and gentle woman who shows strong faith and a passionate love for each of her children.
Peter: Belle's son who becomes a trouble maker and causes a lot of hardships for Belle. He eventually is lost at sea when he has to go aboard a ship after being arrested and Belle's never hears anything about him again.
Frederick Douglass: An African American abolitionist and statesman who escaped from slavery and became a national leader of the abolitionist movement and close friend of Sojourner Truth.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton: One of the main people who led the early women's rights movement, also an abolitionist and suffragist.
